MSc thesis project proposal

A Microfluidic Chip for Filtering Circulating Tumour Cells

SAWs are acoustic waves propagating on the surface of a piezoelectric material, generated by placing electrodes on the material. Standing waves are created by exciting two SAW generators faced each other. The standing waves creates pressure nodes and antinodes along the propagation direction. The particles within the liquid travel through the channel in a laminar flow and are attracted to the nodes created by the acoustic field. The velocity of the particles depends on their size, density, or compressibility. Larger or denser particles are typically attracted toward the force center,  while smaller or less dense particles are slower. So that filtration is performed by directing the particles to different collection chambers based on their sizes. In the project, the simulation & design, fabrication and proof of concept studies should be completed.
